Who is covered by Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people:

  • 65 or older
  • Under 65 with specific disabilities
  • At any age with end-stage renal disease (permanent kidney failure that requires dialysis or a kidney transplant)

What is the Medicare’s Structure?

While Medicare covers a wide variety of senior medical needs, it is governed by many guidelines. You can learn more about Medicare by visiting medicare.gov or calling 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227). TTY users should call 877-486-2048.

Medicare Part A is applied toward the cost of hospital stays.

Medicare Part B is intended to defray the costs of outpatient services and tests, visits to the doctor, etc.

Medicare Advantage (may be referred to a “C”) is an HMO or PPO that takes the place of Parts A and B. If you choose this option, you must purchase it through a private insurer approved by Medicare.

Medicare Part D is the prescription drug component, which you must purchase.

What is Medicaid?

Medicaid is health coverage for persons with limited financial resources. The rules that govern who is eligible and what services are offered vary by state, because Medicaid is provided jointly through state and federal funds. To learn more about Medicaid in Ohio, visit the Medicaid section of the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services web site at http://jfs.ohio.gov/ohp/.
